Villa Puri Pietje
Puri Pietje is a haven for anyone seeking complete and utter seclusion and escape. Set within lush tropical surroundings and perched beside a steep river valley a few kilometers north of Ubud, this quirky four-bedroom villa is enveloped by a mature tropical garden bursting with exotic flora including crimson torch ginger flowers, blossoming frangipani and a variety of palms. At the lower part of the garden is an inviting turquoise swimming pool protectively overlooked by a magnificent curtain of bamboo that dips its feathery branches into the river valley far below. The sound of bird call, crickets and frogs plays a constant background melody during the day alongside the unmistakable crowing of cockerels from nearby homesteads that periodically pierce the balmy tropical air.
This gentle tranquility and almost timeless ambiance makes Puri Pietje the perfect retreat for yoga groups, artists and writers who cherish a little peace and quiet. A ‘peace room’ attached to the master bedroom is designed for practicing yoga but could just as easily be used as a kids playroom or extra bed space. Artists could pitch their easels in the exotic garden and frame any number of views that capture it’s pleasing intricacies and water features or perhaps the billowing foliage that creeps up from the river bank. Ubud’s famed terraced rice paddies offer further food for thought and the rural scenery interspersed with local life that surrounds the villa deserves to be explored.
All four of Puri Pietje’s bedrooms are simply designed and come with an ensuite bathroom and sliding doors that open widely onto the garden. The villa features a wealth of interesting furnishings and fittings and presents a handful of peaceful pockets for relaxing, including an air conditioned TV Room and a day room with antique four-poster bed that could easily sleep an extra child. Meals can be taken inside, in the bright living and dining area, or outside on the veranda, and there are a handful of cushioned lounge chairs where you can sit back, put your feet up and immerse yourself a good book. The villa comes with a small day-time staff team, but does include a cook for breakfast and Indonesian lunch/dinners prepared in advance for you (all groceries at cost price).
Puri Pietje is set back from a country road about four kilometres north of Ubud town centre. Its neighbours are traditional Balinese houses interspersed with rice terraces, coconut palms, jungle and a steep river gorge. Here, the local people go about their daily lives as they have done for centuries, by farming the land, and honouring the gods with lavish temple festivals. Visitors may notice the men attending community meetings to discuss village ceremonies, or the democratic cooperative management of the subak (the complex irrigation of the rice fields). Just two kilometres south of the villa in Kutuh Kaja are Ubud’s botanical gardens that beautifully meander through five hectares of natural ravine, featuring both endemic and imported plant species. There are no shops or amenities between the villa and Ubud, so a car is necessary if you wish to dine out or explore.
